<reviewbody>I love this third set, but I had a much warmer tape, with audience, and NO dropouts. Its really a shame because Jerry is on Fire for this set and his guitar is often lost in this mix. I saw that the Pre-FM is out there on etree's list. I'm pretty sure that's the better mix. Here's hoping it'll show up.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>Pretty good show, certainly better than some of the subequebt years. The only time besides the day before I ever got to watch Grateful Dead rehearse. Being on the temporary crew to work for my admittance, (I didn't blow any of those too many balloons, at least too many, the previous year as Weir exclaimed); as I had done at most of the previous year's end shows before this year. Even though I had tickets for all of them prior to my arrival, I sold mine as a result, but that's a better story the previous year !
In this case, the Tower of Power horn section was warming up with almost all of them ! But who was missing you ask ? Ah but alas, after nagging & begging finally Garcia gave up his some what arrogant attitude that these tune were easy enough. (And it is true he could probably play despite the absent performance since '71 or so, Lovelight, Hard to Handle or even Etta James' tunes, etc. in his sleep !) I can't recall what precisely he said, since he wasn't mic'd but something to that effect and certainly he conveyed that attitude.
So eventually they were all out here warming up with the horns. Like Etta said, "the baddest American Blues Band,.. when you here the Grateful Dead you here the blues...where'd you get a name like that anyhow(way) ?"</reviewbody>
<reviewtitle>Well not quite like the year before but thats' stiff competition !</reviewtitle>

<reviewbody>Have to agree with happytrails that, although this is a nice, clean sounding SBD, Garcia's guitar gets kind of lost in the mix. This is especially noticeable during the excellent jam into 'NFA'; both Jerry's fluid solo and Cipollina's psychedelic whammy-bar effects are not nearly as prominent as on the fragment of this show that was in circulation in the Bay Area back in the 80's. Here's hoping another version of this uneven but very interesting show turns up.

The show as a whole was a gas. As an entire evening's entertainment, it beats any other New Year's show I attended personally. Batucaje were fun. The Dinosaurs, always entertaining, were really on. Better than the Dead, actually. Nicky Hopkins sat in on piano, and Country Joe sang 'Save the Whales' wearing some kind of turban and a lot of eye-makeup, or so it seemed from about 20 feet in front of the board. The song went over really well. I also remember thinking that 'Promontory Rider' sounded really good that night; as a general rule, I'm not that big a fan of Robert Hunter as a performer, but his over-emoting didn't really stand out quite so much in a band with so many other powerful personalities. The whole Dinosaurs' set was a great performance by a Bay Area favorite, and a tape of it would be extremely welcome.

The Dead, admittedly, had an up and down night. The 'Cold Rain' opener got things off to an energetic start, and Bill Graham emerging from a giant mushroom was fun, but the 'Space' into 'NFA' was really the musical high point of the evening, as far as I'm concerned. It's too bad you can't hear Garcia and Cipollina better on this SBD. This was pretty much the end of the line for 'NFA' out of 'Space', as they had recently started pairing it with 'Throwing Stones', a duo that rapidly became formulaic. The set-list and guests for the third set sort of speak for themselves. Since I was outside waiting in line for New Years tickets during the show on the 30th, I didn't have a clue what was in store. So the presence of Etta James and Tower of Power was a real surprise. From where I was standing, though, the horns sort of drowned everybody else out.

All in all, a good, long, varied evening of music, although not a historic performance by the Dead.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>God we waited so long for the tickets — finally Bill Graham came out with the tickets.... wow we were in! All the other posts are right on, there was so much going on it was bigger then the band. My favorites were "Baby what you want me to do?" Clearly ol' Etta had never seen anything like us — a bunch of crazies groovin like there was no tomorrow.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>maybe a little too much treble, but crystal clear...love the songs with Etta James. In Rock Scully's book he talks about how she barely made it to the gig as they sent a limo for her, she barely knew who they were, when she arrived of course, they are all tripping, and after it was over she says man that boy who looks funny sure can play guitar!! matt kelly turns it loose...gets the boys back to their roots, blues...great CC Rider</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>Strange trip, end of '82. Hanging out in Oakland with Karen and Bill. Finding my head and feeling like I wished my hair was longer...kept the beret on and waited for hours at the end of the show to retrieve my jacket. Finally got back to cold Mission Street across the Bay and ended up crawling into foggy Haight after 3:00 am, sad, tired, out of place. Wish I had enjoyed the night and music more....another Dead night in the historical circa.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>While this show does not live up to the New Years Eve of the year before, it does have some great moments and Music making. Seeing the boys with Etta was awesome, and I love that she says that The dead are the best blues band. First set was solid and the second set started great but kinda fizzled after NFA, and the third set is a must have for collectors.

The wierd sound effects at the beginning of Sugar Mag was the end of the New Years Countdown. Uncle Bobo was riding a large psychedelic mushroom was once again dressed as Father Time and he was throwing joints into the crowd. As the mushroom made its way through the crowd the countdown was accompanied by the classical music, which was not turned off until the first few bars of Sugar Mag had started.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>Listened to this one a few times now, great show. The last set with Etta James and the Tower of Power is a must-listen

This one has special meaning, as I was born on 1982-12-31... I was around 10 hours old when all this was happening! I'm glad the boys were on fire that night! I'd have loved to see it in person.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>well I don't rate shows very often- but I had to chime in. This is hardly a 5 star show- I'd say three and a half so four stars (people on here have a habit of over-rating shows)

((you want a TRUE 5 star show? Try 3-1-69)) I DARE you to find even ONE thing wrong with that show (except MAYBE the encore) but it's still better than Weight or Blo...er....dayjob.

<reviewbody>Well, the stale bagel courtesy of BG was a little chewy at 4 am, but this was a fun final NYE at the Auditorium. The Etta James is way cool. As someone backstage told me after, "Get a old colored lady f*ck*d up and you never know what's going to happen!" Wouldn't have missed it for the world!</reviewbody>
